Flood conditions change slightly overnight

Prince george Citizen, Breaking News

City hall continued to warn residents and businesses along the Nechako River of the potential for localized flooding as conditions have changed only minimally overnight.

The ice jam, which was about five kilometers long Wednesday afternoon when it reached the John Hart Bridge, has now backed up to Pozer Road, another half-kilometre away from the confluence of the Nechako River and Fraser River.

The water level has risen about three centimeters in the McAloney Road area, prompting one business to evacuate its premises. And on River Road, both Brink Forest Products and Winton Global's planer processing division remained closed for another day.

John Brink said the water rose about an inch overnight and is finding new places to pond.

"The one building has about an inch of water in it, maximum two inches so far so we're still fairly optimistic that area will remain o.k.," he said.

Asked if they're taking any action to mitigate possible damage, Brink said there's not much that can be done at this point.

"We're just sitting back and hoping for the best," he said.

However, ice levels have risen minimally along River Road and Pulp Mill Road and no rise in river levels has been observed in the Pozer Road area. And after shutting down on Tuesday, Lakeland Mills returned to operation on Wednesday and continued to be running today, with crews working around the water that has collected on the site.

No further evacuation alerts or evacuation orders have been issued by city hall since Tuesday evening -- 12 homes on River Road and one on Pulpmill Road remain evacuated -- and no more roads have been closed.

The state of local emergency declared late Monday remains in effect for low-lying areas on the Nechako River from the confluence of the two rivers to City limits.
