John Brink addresses participating students at Brink Forest Products session.

Prince George’s leading value-added lumber re-manufacturer, Brink Forest Products has announced it will become a major supporter of the Yellowhead Rotary Club’s vocational service projects. The Club operates the popular “Adventures in Forestry” program, which immerses forty secondary school students from across Canada for an intensive four-day exploration of the many facets of the forest industry. A highlight of the Adventures in Forestry program will be a special presentation, “Opportunities in the New Forest Industry”, hosted by Brink Forest Products and featuring keynote speaker, The Honourable Michael DeJong, Minister of Forests.

Founder and President of Brink Forest Products, Mr. John Brink, said, “The BC Forest Industry is on the threshold of major change, which I believe will create exciting new career opportunities in all aspects of the forest industry – and particularly in the area of further manufacturing of wood products. I am delighted to support the Yellowhead Rotary Club’s projects, including the “Adventures in Forestry” program – and to host the students for a special presentation by Minister DeJong.”

“Many people mistakenly believe our forest industry is in decline, and that career opportunities for young persons are limited”, said Mr. Brink. He emphasized, “Nothing could be further from the truth”, noting that policy reform will create a wide range of new opportunities for both corporations and for workers.” Mr. Brink has been an outspoken advocate for the value-added sector, and has consistently stated we must do more with our fibre.  “The manufacturing of dimension lumber is extremely important,” adds Mr. Brink, “but there are huge opportunities to grow new businesses and careers through further manufacturing.” Mr. Brink noted that the “Adventures in Forestry program is an important catalyst to encourage students to follow a career path in forestry and forest products.

Minister DeJong will speak to the students and invited guests at Brink Forest Products on Friday, May 9, 2003.  During a following tour of the mill, participants will get a first hand look at the processes used at Brink to re-manufacture inferior lumber into top-quality finished lumber through fingerjointing and milling.

Now in its 13th year, the “Adventures in Forestry” program runs from May 7 – 10.  The co-chairs of the Yellowhead Rotary Club’s program, Mr. Wade Billy and Mr. Jim McIvor, expressed their appreciation and thanks for the strong support from Brink Forest Products. Mr. Billy said, “Adventures in Forestry” couldn’t exist without strong support by local industry and the community”. Mr. McIvor added, “We know the program works. We have a number of students in forestry or wood technology programs at UNBC and CNC who were earlier participants in our AIF program
